The Out and Succeeding in STEM Conference is a platform to encourage LGBTQ+ students to pursue education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
why is STEM representation so important?
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are some of the fastest growing and most influential fields globally. It is essential to have LGBTQ+ individuals in these fields, as a STEM workforce informed by diverse experiences leads to a greater richness of ideas and innovation. However, many LGBTQ+ students are deterred from STEM fields early on, fearful of prejudice and exclusion.
The OASIS Conference aims to combat the leaky STEM pipeline by reaching out to LGBTQ+ students who are still in high school or are just beginning their undergraduate studies. OASIS connects these students with successful LGBTQ+ STEM professionals, graduate students, and peers, immediately providing attendees with mentorship in their field of interest. Additionally, students will get an inside look at research projects taking place in Southern California. The conference comes complete with a keynote, a career fair featuring LGBTQ+ friendly STEM employers, breakout sessions, and a student panel. Overall, the conference will inspire and empower, demonstrating that it is possible to both be 'out' and succeed in STEM.
